Still explaining the concept of holiness with the principles of marriage. Yesterday, we compared the ‘for better or worse’ clause in marriage with our relationship with God, which is a marriage of two spirits – God’s spirit intertwining with our human spirit to become one – 1 Cor 6:17. Then 1 Cor 7:4 showed us that since we’re in a marriage with God, our body is no more ours but God’s and so we have to keep it holy, being his temple!
Let’s go a little further. According to the scriptures, marriage is consumated only when there’s consent from the both families. That consent is usually symbolized with the giving & acceptance of ‘Bride Price’ (or dowry) – Gen 24:53. Salvation is also not by force, we all accepted Jesus willingly, and he saved us unconditionally. So, when we see in 1 Cor 6:20 that we are bought with a price, it means Jesus has paid the ‘Bride Price’ for our spiritual marriage. He paid with His blood.
Hence, we have no choice but to be holy, because our ‘husband’ is Holy and we are already one with him. Holiness is not a nature we want to attain, it became our default nature at new birth – 2 Cor 5:17. As Christians, meddling with sin is ‘struggling’ to be who we aren’t. We have been bought with a price. Jesus paid the most expensive bride price in the history of creation. He paid with His life, he paid with blood.
So, what’s our response? Actually it’s our reward. Holiness! Bible says in 1 Cor 6:20b.. – ‘Glorify God with your BODY and with your SPIRIT, because both are his. So, your holiness is what glorifies God, sin doesn’t glorify Him.
