About 20 years ago, while a I did my final overnight preparation for a particular exam, I slept off. I was reading with a candle. Well, thank God! What woke me up was the smell of my burning hair and textbook. Nothing happened to me, just a few hair strands got burnt. Praise God!
But I learnt a lesson – As important as quality sleep is to the body, sleeping too much or at the wrong times, could be dangerous, especially for the believer. We wrestle against spiritual wickedness in high places, and much of this wrestling is done in prayer, staying awake in the night! Have you been engaging personally in overnight prayers?
Even Jesus, during His darkest moments before the cross, was disappointed that his disciples couldn’t even watch for one Hour, while He also went to pray. That day, He gave us a template. “Pray for one hour at least, every night! He said “Watch and Pray, so you don’t enter into temptation” – Matt 26:26-40. Untamed appetite for sleep makes you weak spiritually. You can’t watch, you can’t pray, you’ll be falling in and out of the devil’s temptations. Here’s how you’d know you’re in that trap, you find yourself asking for God’s forgiveness time and again. Kindly note that when you eat too much, you will sleep too much.
Sleep is essential for good health, but too much sleep makes you weak and could cause you losses, both physical and spiritual. That harlot in 1 Kings 3:19, killed her baby because she couldn’t tame her appetite for sleep. Our Lord Jesus nailed it when he said “while men slept, the enemy came and manipulated evil into their lives”. Cut your sleep brethren! Come awake in between your long sleeps and worship God, pray. Tame your appetite for sleep. That’s how Kings and great men are formed. Too much sleep leads to poverty (Prob 24:33). You will not be poor in Jesus Name. Amen!
