Even though man is spirit, God gave us a body to transport that spirit around in this physical world. The world is physical, but ruled by spiritual realities. Man is supposed to be chief of those spiritual entities controlling the affairs of this world. But he needs a body to do that.
Now, this body has its own instructions, and the body always wants pleasures. Those instructions are called feelings. They manifest in form of appetites. Be careful. Tame your appetites. Don’t allow your body dictate to you how much of pleasure you should give it, and reject every move to be controlled by your feelings.
Today, we’re zooming in particularly on appetite for food. You know our series is “I know whom I believed”, and along the line we said, since receiving comes after believing, so we know whom we received. We received the Spirit of God, we haven’t received the spirit of the world. But what is the spirit of the world? The spirit of the world manifests in 3 areas – The lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and pride of life – 1 John 2:16. Praise God, Jesus clinched victory over all three when He was tempted – Check Matthew 4:4, 7 and 10.
In Matthew 4, Jesus had fasted 40 days, and was hungry, very hungry. Had He not tamed His appetite for food, he would have converted stone to bread, at the devil’s instance. That would have been terrible – God obeying Satan? God forbid. Man shall not live by bread alone. I wish we could proclaim that to every temptation to give off our authority due to untammed appetite for food. Jesus later changed water to wine in John 2:1-10, but only at His own instance, for God to be glorified!
Eat light, eat moderate, avoid being heavy at night. That alone cures nightmares you know? Accept meals with caution. When I’m out of home, especially to new environments, and you offer me food, I hardly eat. If I feel you may be embarrassed because I declined, my default response (with a smile of gratitude) is, “Oh, thanks, please can you pack it? I took that position because as I began to speak on various platforms and locations, everyone offers food as a first gift of appreciation, and besides we’re always hungry after speaking. Please be careful, don’t eat away your destiny, like Esau did in Gen 25:34.
