In the movies, whenever we watch the protagonist captured, taken hostage, or imprisoned somewhere, we always have this confidence that help is coming for him. Maybe some members of his gang, coming to rescue him in a gestapo commando style, or some government security forces coming to burst the bad guys’ conspiracy, and free the protagonist. Either way, we’re certain, help is coming.
The Holy Spirit is that help to the believer. But He’s even a more sophisticated and proactive help. He doesn’t wait until we’re in trouble. He helps us avert the trouble. The Amplified version of John 14:16 introduced the Holy Spirit as our Helper in place of the word ‘Comforter’ as we read in the KJV, and then expands that ‘Helper’, to include the comforter and other attributes. Well, all on point. There, we see 7 functions of the holy spirit namely: Helper, Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counsellor, Strengthener and Standby. Let’s start today with Comforter.
Four times in the book of John, Our Lord Jesus describes the assignments of the comforter. In John 14:16, he will abide with us for ever, in John 14:26, he’s our teacher and will remind us of Jesus’ words. That’s a Counsellor you know? And that’s the second function – Counsellor. The Holy Spirit should not be one of your counselors, He should be your COUNSELLOR. Human counsellors should only give insights that supports the Holy Spirit’s counsel in you.
In John 15:26, He calls the comforter the spirit of truth, and his Job here is to testify of Jesus in us. That again falls in the purview of the counsellor, whom the Holy Spirit is to you. John 16:14 says ‘He shall glorify me, for he shall receive from me and show it to you’. That’s what counsellors do.
In conclusion, in this class, we have seen the first two functions of the Holy Spirit – As a comforter who stays with us forever, and as a counsellor who teaches us and reminds us of our saviours’ grace. In other words, he will not just abide with us and be idle, he will conscioisly engage our minds and spirit with the life and instructions of Jesus, Bearing witness in us that we are the sons and daughters of God.
Romans 8:16 says: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. Wow! This agrees with John 14:26!. I’m blessed, I’m sure you are too, in Jesus Name, Amen, Hallelujah!
