If you’re not used to speaking the word when there’s no trouble, then your declarations will lack requisite power in the face of challenges. If you’re not used to speaking peace when there is calmness, then your declarations of peace will lack capacity in the face of challenges. God cannot be mocked. Whatever a man sows, he will reap.

Here’s another way to look at it. Reaching out into your Shepherd’s pouch, into your store, your repository of revelations from God, comes naturally. God’s word that you have stored in you flows out of your mouth, out of you, naturally when it’s needed.

We will continue very quickly with the sub-series we started. Remember out main series is still ‘COME, DRINK – If any man thirsts, let him come unto me and drink – John 7:37-38

We have been taking this series, subseries by subseries. In this sub series, we’re looking at weapons at the river. In the last class, we saw how David got to the river and picked the stones he needed to fight Goliath and defeat him. We saw there that he picked 5 stones and we saw the reasons why he had to pick stones from the river and not elsewhere.

When we started that discussion, we quickly saw that when David picked the 5 stones in 1 Sam 17:39-40, he put them in his shepherd’s bag

1 Samuel 17:40

And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook,

And what did he do?

And put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

So, in this class, we’ll be looking at the Shepherd’s bag, or the Shepherd’s pouch. You may want to say, shepherds mean leaders and pastors. Yes, but the Bible says He has made us Kings and priests unto our God and we shall reign in the earth. That’s Rev 5:10.

Revelation 5:10
[10]And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

Whatever grace available to spiritual leaders, pastors, is available to everyone. Jesus Christ said in Mark 13:37 says that what he’s saying to one , he’s saying to all. So, the Shepherd’s pouch/bag is what every believer should have. It is that repository or deposit of God’s word and Revelations that you have received from Him personally, or even corporately or jointly. If it’s not gotten personally, then it must be that you have treasured it personally.

The Shepherd’s bag implies that we have to consciously select and keep filling our repository with God’s word, direction, instruction. We’ll definitely need to draw power from there at all times. Please don’t think you can just wake up all of a sudden and swallow God’s word just as you swallow medicine when you’re sick. You don’t begin to look for scriptures to quote or memorize the moment there’s trouble at hand. God responds at such times by His Mercy. You get real victory when you make it a lifestyle to consciously and consistently store up your Shepherd’s bag.

Just like David selected 5 stones from the Brook and kept them in the Shepherd’s bag. Today, we’re focusing on that instrument called the Shepherd’s bag. We are interpreting it by the Holy Spirit, to be your repository of God’s word.

Bible says in Matt 12:34 that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. So, what’s the abundance of your own heart? Many stock their own repository with so many other things – Music lyrics, not even gospel music, worldly slangs, fear from daily news. Fear from the economy.

Joshua 1:8 has said that this book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate therein day and night. The Shepherd’s pouch is the totality of word instruments to make sure that God’s word gets into you and stays there. Things he has shown you while you studied personally, while you listened to His word, words that impressed power on you while you stayed in God’s presence.

Luke 6:45 says

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

REMEMBER, the Bible has instructed that we guard our heart with diligence, for out of it flows the issues of life. It means that your heart is the Shepherd’s bag we’re talking about here.

David already had this Shepherd’s bag, because he was a shepherd. Now, he’s going to need that Shepherd’s bag because he has to fight Goliath and kill him. At the point where he picked the stones, Goliath was not at that location. Yet, he picked the stones and kept them in his shepherd’s bag.

You may not seemingly have battles to fight now, something may be coming in the spirit realm, and you don’t even need to worry about it, as long as you’re consciously filling your repository with God’s word, and Revelations.

Back to 1 Sam 17:40, in times of trouble or need, we can only place demands on God’s word that we have stored up before then. The Shepherd’s bag is our store of personal encounters, Revelations from him, and testimonies of His manifestations in our lives and in other people’s lives that we have internalized and personalized.

That’s Shepherd’s pouch in which David kept his 5 stones , was the same thing he reached out to, when the time came to kill Goliath.

In 1 Sam 17:49 When it was the exact time you used the stones, he didn’t hesitate, because he had previously, consciously stored the stones there.

1 Samuel 17:48-49
[48]And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

[49]And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

Check out verse 49, David dipped his hand into the shepherd’s bag. Brethren, please from today, always dip your hand into your spiritual repository. How do you do that? You pause, keep quiet, and peep into your spirit, and there’s a word waiting for you from God, that you had previously stored in that repository, into your Shepherd’s bag. That’s what you need to reject or reverse sudden unwanted situations the devil serves towards you. The word comes out of your mouth and spontaneously, you get instant manifestations. It doesn’t just happen, by chance. You must have consciously filled your cloud with water, before rain can fall. You must have consciously filled your Shepherd’s bag with stones to be able to draw from it in the face of sudden appearance of a Goliath. Hallelujah.

Let’s look at this. In Psalms 20,verses 1-4

Psalms 20:1-4

[1](To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.) The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;

This is powerful. May we not fall into trouble, but Bible already says watch and pray, so you don’t fall into temptations. Part of your watching and praying is to be able to reach out into your repository and recall a word or an encounter for your situation, when there’s a need for it.

The name of the God of Jacob defends you – That’s what happens when you reach out into your Shepherd’s bag. Your spirit comes alive at the instance of God’s word, an encounter, a testimony that you invoked from your spiritual repository.

You can say, Lord you once told me this; there must be a reversal now; I’m confident I’m coming out victorious, because I’ve been there before and you saw me through.

[2]Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;

When you reach out into your Shepherd’s bag, suddenly strength comes, help comes in that situation.

[3]Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.

Excuse me, what if there had not been any offering? That’s one of the things you store in your Shepherd’s bag. Your offerings. Everytime you give an offering, you’re also stocking your Shepherd’s bag, your repository. Your sacrifices towards God’s kingdom also help to stock up your Shepherd’s bag.

In Isaiah 38:1-5, when God Sent prophet Isaiah to tell Hezekiah that he was going to die, Hezekiah turned to the wall and reminded God of his sacrifice towards him. Instantly, God sent Isaiah again to reverse this message.

[4]Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel.

Hallelujah!! You know we had seen in the beginning that out of Abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks, that’s Matt 12:34 and Luke 6:45..Now, we see here in Psalms 20:4 – “Grant thee according to your heart and fulfil all thy counsel”.

According to your heart means according to what you have stored in your repository. It comes spontaneously. If you have stored nothing there, no strength can be drawn. May you not lack strength in the day of trouble. You have power and strength in such days when you have consciously made deposits into your Shepherd’s bag, just like depositing money into your bank account. When you need money urgently, all you need is to make withdrawals. If there’s no deposit, there can be no withdrawals.

After both of them had thrown words at themselves in 1 Sam 17:43-47 where Goliath had cursed David with his gods and David also talked back and prophesied that he will kill Goliath and cut off his head.

Then it was time for action, in verse 48, Goliath advanced towards David to fulfil his threat, but David also ran towards him and in verse 49,

HE DIPPED HIS HAND INTO HIS BAG TOOK OUT A STONE. That’s it!

It’s one thing to speak by faith, but it’s another thing to reach out into your repository and strengthen your words of faith with the word of God. It’s the word of God in your proclamation that the devil fears. It could be a testimony provoking God to action.

“God, you did this, some time ago, and you’re still alive, to do it again.’

1 Samuel 17:46-47
[46]This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

[47]And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.

Those words were powerful, David had done well, and decreed Goliath’s death because he has defied the God of hosts,.

But he didn’t just stop there and do nothing, when the Philistines drew near, David wasn’t perturbed, he even ran towards him a
AND THEN reached into his repository and pulled out one of the 5 stones he had stored there.

Just one word is what you need to take control of every situation.. Situations happen and if you’re not in control, events fall over one another and get out of hands. May you not be without a stone in the face of an emergent Goliath, in Jesus Name.

1 Samuel 17:49
[49]And David put his hand in his bag, and took the stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

At the instance of God’s word, all situations and Goliath’s will fall dead before you in Jesus Name.

If you do not yet have Jesus, you don’t even have a Shepherd’s pouch. May your spirit not be empty when you need a word desperately in a situation. If you want God’s word to work for you at any time, please come to Jesus Today. If you’ve received him before and you need to rededicate your life, this is also for you.

Say Lord Jesus, I come to you today. I accept you as my Lord and saviour. I repent of my sins and I forsake them. I’m ready and I accept you into my life. Forgive my sins, make me whole and write my name into your book of Life. From today, I’m a child of God, I’m free. In Jesus’ name, we’ve prayed. Amen.
